Pence's spa day and trip to the greenhouse

It was time to pamper the queen of the Urban Mushers household. We treated Pence, our semi-retired sled dog, to a day full of brushing, nail trims and a trip to a local greenhouse to explore.

Gooood morning! We hope your week is off to a great start!

Any fun plans for this week? We got a lot of rain Monday, so we’re hoping to dodge that the rest of the week. We’re hoping to get some more flight hours in with the new drone, get some free-running in with Pence and hopefully enjoy some nice Spring weather (finally).

But enough about us boring humans.. let’s get into Pence’s fun weekend!

PS…

Make sure you read to the end of Pence’s story for an update on our premium subscription tiers. We’re now offering different tier levels, with even more opportunities to engage with us, or still support us on a lower level, without as big of a financial burden.

Pence was a busy girl this weekend.

As the temperatures have gotten warmer, Pence seems to be shedding a little more than normal. It’s a bit early for her to blow her winter coat entirely, but she has been shedding quite a bit.

Riley gave her a good brushing. I would do it, but when the hair flies everywhere, it makes me sneeze and stuffs up my sinuses! Pence enjoys getting brushed. For her, it’s just like super intense back scritches. Especially around her butt. She does the whole wiggle but move when you brush her in the right spot. (It’s hard to get a video of her doing this, or we would share it lol)

Obviously we knew she was shedding, but holy crap… Riley brushed so much hair off her! It’s her first brushing in a couple months, as we like to let the dogs keep as much of it on during the colder months as possible. It’s probably going to be a 2-3 times a week occurrence for the next month or so with how she’s shedding.

And in true Husky fashion, she leaves behind a bunch of fur balls in the grass. If someone walked into our back yard and saw how much hair was spread all over, they’d think something seriously bad had happened. It was windy that day, so clumps blew all across the back yard.

Pence also needed her nails cut, so it was a full spa day. Minus the dreaded bath. Luckily, she is so much better about getting her nails clipped than Boo is. She doesn’t fight it too much, especially if you keep her distracted with belly rubs. She did however, require a mid-nail-clipping wrestle break. Riley obliged.

Riley and Pence wrestling in the yard

Wrestling is Pence’s favorite new activity. Anytime she’s laying on her side with her belly exposed and Riley starts playing with her feet or her snout, Pence starts swatting back at him. This leads to full chaos. Riley attacks, Pence attacks back. She even starts to get her back feet involved, giving her the advantage. She’s so smart!

It’s a blast to see this side of Pence come out.

Anyways…

Most of her nails are white/clear, so it’s easy to see the quick. She does have one black nail though, where we can’t see the quick at all. Unfortunately, Riley nicked the quick on that nail, and a few drops of blood followed. Pence didn’t seem to mind too much, but she had to spend a few extra minutes outside to let it dry up before returning to her throne (couch) that sits on our white carpet.

She looks so sad in the picture above, but we swear she’s just fine. She’s just behaving like a good doggo… unlike Boo!

So now that she’s looking all pretty, on to her next adventure!

We thought it would be fun to take Pence to one of Riley’s family’s greenhouses to try and get some cute photos of Pence and the beautiful flowers. Pence wanted absolutely nothing to do with it lol.

It was very windy, with gusts over 40mph. I think the noise of the plastic blowing around on the outside of the greenhouses may have scared her. There weren’t very many people around, so I don’t think people were the problem.

I was hoping she would enjoy all the interesting smells there, but she was pulling so hard and zig zagging through all the plants and tables that I don’t think she really even got a whiff. We managed to get a couple decent photos of her, and then took her back home.

When we took Boo to the greenhouses in previous years, he actually enjoyed the people and the smells, but apparently it was not Pence’s cup of tea. We’re trying to socialize her more, but she’s definitely anxious in new situations.

Quarterly mailers

A note for our awesome Urban Mushers premium subscribers: your quarterly mailers have been sent! Keep an eye out for them in the mail in the coming days.

We are missing mailing addresses from a few of our Urban Mushers + subscribers. Those subscribers should have received an email yesterday asking for your name and mailing address if you’re interested in receiving the quarterly mailers.

If you believe you should have received one and don’t receive it by mid-May, please let us know!

Update to the Urban Mushers Premium Subscriptions

We’ve restructured our premium subscriptions! We now offer two subscription tiers, similar to how Patreon offers multi-tier subscriptions. We did this for two reasons.

One: to offer a less-expensive option for those who want to support us and receive a little bit of extra content each week/month without breaking the bank.

Two: to offer even more perks for the higher tier so that it is more beneficial to you!

Now, in addition to the weekly video and quarterly mailer, the higher tier (Fanatics - $10/mo) will be invited to a monthly Zoom call with us and the dog(s), depending on if we have Boo at the time of the call or not.

You’ll also receive a Boo and Pence sticker, as well as the opportunity to place your name on some of our equipment!

Here’s a full breakdown of the two tiers:

Urban Mushers +

  • Weekly short video from the team

  • Quarterly thank you mailer from Boo and Pence

Urban Mushers Fanatics

Everything in Urban Mushers +, plus:

  • Monthly Zoom call with us and the dogs

  • Boo and Pence sticker

  • Chance to place your name on our equipment

By joining the Urban Mushers + or Urban Mushers Fanatics, you directly support the dogs and our mushing efforts. All proceeds go back into the team, whether it’s for fixing/upgrading gear, dog food/medicine, or travel costs for events.

We appreciate all the support we’ve received since we launched the Urban Mushers a few months ago and hope to continue providing awesome content to all of you!

Our favorite gear:

We often get asked about the gear we use for both us and our dogs. We talk about everything we use from helmets and harnesses to lights and antennas for our bike.
