Boo's Back! And So Is His Nail Trimming Saga
Can you guess how that went?
Big news: Boo is back!! If you didn’t know, Boo spends about half his time at our house and half his time with Beth. He goes back and forth roughly every 4-6 weeks, but more on his “custody” in a future newsletter.
Hannah and Boo cuddling on the couch
Boo had a pretty traumatic start to the weekend - he got his nails cut. I know, we are just SO MEAN. We would do it ourselves, but he SCREAMS HIS FOOL HEAD OFF, and fights like no other. It’s impossible.
There’s a few posts on Twitter of his past experiences…
The first summer we had him, I (Hannah) tried to cut his nails myself and successfully cut four nails over a month span while he was sleeping.
We’ve tried letting the vet cut his nails after he’s been drugged, but he puts up potentially even a worse fight with them. Probably because they require that we muzzle Boo, which likely freaks him out even more. They charged me $40 to cut half his nails because he’s a “level 3” traumatic patient. We’ve found a local lady that does grooming and nail cutting for a living and she seems to have the best luck, even if it does sound like children are being murdered for 20 minutes.
I had Beth give Boo some trazodone before she took him to the groomer lady and told her to bring a towel to put over his head. For some reason, that calms him down a little. Whatever works. I was told this was the best trip to get his nails cut yet, as the trazodone and towel trick did help - some. We’ll take it!
Pence getting her nails trimmed
Pence recently got her nails trimmed as well, our first time since we’ve had her. But like the goodest girl that she is, she doesn’t mind it at all! She laid back on the floor and enjoyed the attention. I wish Boo would take some notes from her in this department lol.
While Boo still hates the nail cutting, he at least allows us to touch his paws more now. Especially Riley, who used to never be able to touch his paws, even when trying to get Boo to shake. He has random days where he doesn’t like them being touched (of course he does, because he’s Boo…) but overall he’s a much more chill doggo now when it comes to things like that.
After a crazy day, both dogs relaxed on the couch and took an evening nap together. The whole sharing the couch thing is another story in itself for another day..

Happy Holidays!
From me, Riley, Boo, and Pence, we wish everyone a very happy holiday! We’ll be back next week with another blast from the past on Tuesday, where Riley talks about how he first heard about mushing!
